Toxics Release Inventory National Analysis for 2019 Issued By EPA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued its Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) National Analysis for 2019. Covering toxic chemical releases and waste management actions during that year, the TRI National Analysis is an important component of the Agency’s pollution prevention efforts. This blog post reviews the Inventory and presents several major findings of the Analysis.

About the Toxics Release Inventory

Containing 770 chemicals and 33 chemical categories, the TRI is used for tracking the release of certain toxic chemicals into the environment from more than 20,000 facilities throughout the United States. Releases typically include emissions into air or water. They may also include landfill disposal.

Chemicals selected for inclusion in the TRI include ones that cause one or a combination of the following:

  • Serious harmful environmental effects
  • Serious harmful acute human health effects
  • Serious harmful chronic human health effects, or cancer

Companies that use, produce, or process any of these chemicals at or over designated amounts must annually report these levels for inclusion in the TRI.

TRI National Analysis Findings

Results of the TRI National Analysis for 2019 demonstrate significant reductions in toxic chemical releases, as well as improvements in corresponding waste and pollution management efforts.

  • 3,285 new pollution decreasing actions were implemented in 2019. This represented an increase of 4% from the previous year.
  • The quantity of TRI chemicals released into the air decreased by 57% (by more than 750 million pounds) between 2007 and 2019, with a 4% (23 million pounds) reduction between 2018 and 2019.
  • The quantity of production-based waste decreased by 4% between 2018 and 2019.
  • The amount of disposal decreased by 9% between 2018 and 2019.
