Substances of Concern in Products (SCIP) Data Published: A Look at the Information

Following its release almost one year ago, the SCIP (Substances of Concern In articles or complex objects (Products)) database now features more than four million article notifications from approximately 6,000 European Union (EU) companies. Consumers and professionals are able to use this valuable resource to help inform their decision-making processes. In this blog post, we take a look at the database and review some of the key information available thus far.

About the SCIP Database

The European Union Waste Framework Directive requires European market businesses that introduce articles containing SVHCs (substances of very high concern) with concentrations > 0.1% weight by weight (w/w) to provide pertinent data about them to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). This applies not only to manufacturers of these articles, but also to distributors and importers. The SCIP database was designed to allow access to such data, and it can be searched based on multiple factors, including article identity, article category, material and mixture category, substance of concern, and reason for inclusion.

A principal aim of the SCIP database is to help yield a reduction in the quantity of hazardous chemical waste in the EU through the utilization of safer alternative chemical substances in articles. The database is also intended to provide relevant hazardous substance information to waste operators, facilitating the potential recycling of waste materials for use in new articles. With SCIP, information on Candidate List chemicals (Candidate List of substances of very high concern for authorization) present in articles is accessible during the entire product lifecycle.

Highlights of the Data

A review of the SCIP database and the information submitted thus far has yielded several findings. Among the database notifications, the substances of very high concern found listed most frequently include the following:

  • 1,6,7,8,9,14,15,16,17,17,18,18-dodecachloropentacyclo[12.2.1.16,9.02,13.05,10]octadeca-7,15-diene
  • lead
  • lead monoxide
  • lead titanium trioxide
  • silicid acid, lead salt

The product categories noted most frequently in the database include:

  • electronic equipment
  • furniture
  • machinery of various types
  • measuring equipment
  • motor vehicles and associated forms of transportation
  • rubber articles

More information on the SCIP database can be found on the ECHA's website as it becomes available.
